Congratulations on the birth of your child and on your decision to consider having your child baptized. With proper preparation and care, the baptism of your child, and accompanying events, can be one of the most meaningful and fulfilling days in the life of your family. Baptism, although a simple, one-time act, contains numerous elements; it is multifaceted in source, scope and significance.
After your decision is made; i.e., to proceed or not, the next step is a consultation with the pastor who will "celebrate" the baptism. That step should be taken only after both of you have read and discussed these words. Reading and discussing them may unearth emotions and questions of which you are unaware. Ideally, the baptism of your child should not take place until both of you are in agreement about taking this step on behalf of your child. If you do have questions or qualms, come to the consultation ready to discuss them openly. When you are ready, call and make an appointment with me, Jim Burklo - 415-332-3790 or email Jim Burklo.
If the ceremony is done in Sunday worship, it will take place near the beginning of the 9:30 am service, probably about 9:40am. You may sit where you wish. You will be asked to come forward at the beginning of the ceremony. Any significant friends or members of your family who you want to stand with you, are welcome to do so. You will be asked to confirm your willingness to take on the responsibility for the spiritual nurturing of your child.
Here is an example of an SPC baptism service. This service was for a baptism of both an infant and her father. The mother, Joanna, was present, but she had already been baptised.
